I have not seen any BGK in my LFS since I bought 'Shadow' over a year ago.

I keep looking but no luck.

Now I am looking at the online stores but have no idea who is good and who is not.

I am in Ontario (Canada) and have nothing that I can find locally.

I have a male BGK who is around 10 - 11 inches now.
I would love to find a female 6 - 8 inches at a min.

If that is not possible then I want 3 - 5 small ones who will be raised together - atleast long enough to be able to tell the sexes and maybe see if a couple paired off.
I know how quickly they grow and I understand the water conditions that they need. My current tank has 10x filtration per hour plus a UV sterlizer (72 Gal bowfront). I do regular W/C and do not introduce anything to the tank that has not been through a long QT. In fact nothing has been added to that tank in about 6 months.

I want to make a serious attempt at breeding BGK. I have read everything there is to read (not a lot) on the net and have decided to take that info and some common sense and start trying.

If I can find a 6 - 8 inch female - then the plan will be to find a tank divider or create one - that allows good water flow but will not allow either of BGK to get to the other side. This way they are introduced - neutral territory (new tank) lots of caves - and even if things go badly no one should be injured. If things go well and they seem to play nicely ... then I will have to figure out what step two will be... hmmmm.

If I can find only young ones, then I want to raise them together with enough territory and hiding places hopefully they will grow up together and perhaps eventually I will get a breeding pair that way. I wonder what a breeding pair of BGK would be like in a community tank. ;)

I have been planning, gathering tanks, filters, etc. for a long time now. The only thing that I seem to be having trouble with is findng the BGK.
If you have ordered online from any companies in the last 3 months.. can you please just let me know if you would order from the same place again.
You don't have to provide details if you don't want - just would you do it again or would you go somewhere else.

Anyone with a female for sale... please contact me.

Go fot it bro, as for online stores I don't have any idea coz I usually get BGK from a lfs here.

i get most of my fish online now, because my lfs is rubbish. i get them either from wildwoods or trimar (but trimar only deliver to mainland london) hmmm ur in canada dontknow if wildwoods ships to there, but u can find out - tropicalfishfinder

how big do they need to be sexed? because we usually have to seperate the bgk when they hit around the 2-3 inch mark because they begin to rip each other to pieces.

As long as the tank is big and has a lot of hiding place, you can still keep them around 6-7 inches.... I think

I think it depends on the size of the tank, hiding places/territories, the temprament of the fish and a whole lot of luck.

I am willing to put in the work and $$ to try to do this right.
I just need to find some healthy BGKs.

Thanks for the suggestions I will check out the sites.
I am also going to see if I can get my LFS to order some.
I would really like to be able to 'see' what I am buying :)

I always find BGKs at Big Al's. Do you have one near you at all? You won't find your large female there, but you will find baby ones that you can try raising together. Believe it or not, petsmart also sells BGKs sometimes, however, I don't know how much you would want to trust the healthiness of the fish.

I purchased mine at Big Al's, and so far he is very healthy but VERY shy. He is just a tiny baby one and right now he is in a 55gallon tank with just a couple of danios. (waiting to find some awesome fish before stocking it)..... I am hoping he will come out of his shell..... or his log..... SOON! LOL. He pops out only to grab some blood worms.... even at night. :-(
