I love the black diamond sand for substrate. Looks gorgeous. I have PFS now, but after 5-6 years I really wanna change the look.
As for plants that is very true about large fish. My Gouramis love rearranging plants when my 55 was planted I would have to reroot my plants daily. PITA!!!!! I am going to replant the tank soon, looking into clay pots to keep them plants where I want them, Now I just gotta decide between potting soil, or the bag of eco-complete for the plants.
As for lighting go to home depot and look at shop lamps, They sell them in 2 and 4 foot lengths. You could do 2 4footers and 2 2footers across the tank, or 6 2 footers across the tank. You can either hang them, or lay them on your glass top. I have mine sitting on the glass top. If you do this just make sure the metal on the lamp extends far enough so that the bulbs dont touch the glass.
