Where to buy leopard and nurse?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Noonan - Smoothhounds prefer water temperatures around the 68-70 mark. They can live in warmer, but those temperatures are ideal. With those temperatures you are also limiting alot of possible marine tankmates. However please keep in mind, a Gray Smoothhound the smaller species of Smoothhounds available in California still needs a pond of 1,200-1,500 gallons, and the Grays 2,000 - 2,500.

Well, since its being chilled.. couldn't they be kept with other local fish? Possibly a look down or a few bluefish?

Noonan - Yes they could, however you will only be able to keep it for about a year or so. Max 2 years. So do you have plans for it after that?
Yes sir.. The shark pond at my job (LFS).:naughty:

I have a ton of experiance with all kinds of marine life, except sharks. I maintain aquariums for very wealthy people. I make about $5k a month from just maintaining tanks. To be honest, I should be paying them. They give me the money and I buy all of the equipment and livestock, and I only get the best of the best. They basicially pay me for me to keep a fishtank at their house. They dont want any part of it, except to be able to watch the fish.

I dont have much experiance with sharks besides the bamboo and nurse shark that we have at the lfs I manage.. Its a suken rubbermaid pond, with glass blocks all around it so the water level is actually about 4' higher than the pond itself. Sharks are hard to find here, hence why I dont have much experiance with them..

As far as coldwater, there really is no budget. Why couldn't I get a chiller?

I can easily catch dogfish near my shore house. Seeing as most of them don't get larger than 4', would it be better to setup a coldwater tank for a dogfish?

Yes - you could get a chiller to help keep the water temps down. But the real problem with the Leopard is that the smallest leopard you could get legally is still too large for the tank.

That said - a small smooth hound would be nice substitute. The "dogfish" sounds like it could be the Atlantic or Dusky Smoothhound (Mustelus canis) which is also sometimes called the Smooth Dogfish. Btw these are sold thru some of the east coast based shark dealers. To collect one your self would require special premits.

Still keep in mind - the Smoothhound will out grow the tank you described above. And the Atlantic Smoothhound doesn't require a chiller - like it's pacific cousins may. But it still could help in keeping the tanks temperature down.

Basically if you do decide to get a smoothhound & a nurse - tell you customer, as well as keep in mind your self. You will have to make future placement arrangements for both sharks - since they well out grow the tank, and need new homes, if they can't keep them. So it best to contact you nearest public Aquarium, or plan on building a larger pond, before even getting these sharks.

Not aquarium center in clementon is it?

Depending on the species of Smoothhound you go with, Mustelus Californicus or Mustelus Heneli you will need a pond / tank of 1,200 - 2,500 gallons. Is your stores pond like this? Will keep in mind, having a 8' tank isn't going to count.

Nope, I am in South Jersey. Alot further south actually.

At my store, we have a 1200 gallon rubbermaid tub that we sunk into the floor. It has glass blocks about 4' high above it, with a glass panel in the center. Its all air tight, so it's the 3' (or so) pond, with the 4' ontop of that. I dont know how many gallons it is but I would assume 2400 or more.
