As some of you may know I have been searching for 2 years now for a Salvini cichlid. (I don't want to buy them online because of high shipping costs). I just have a few general questions regarding Salvini cichlids at LFS.

1) Why are salvini cichlids so rare at LFS?
2) Are there any LFS in Eastern MA that have salvini cichlids?
a) If anybody stumbles upon a LFS in Eastern MA that has salvini cichlids can you tell me the name of the shop that it is in and the size of the salvini cichlids there.

Thanks all

The last time I've seen Salvini cichlids were around 2 years ago but they shouldn't be hard to get. If you don't want to order online I suggest asking your lfs if they can special order Salvini. It was a Petsmart that had them.

I tried petco salvinis twice but both times they died in quarantine. I think it was because the petco salvinis were tiny (less than 1 inch long). That's why I'm trying to get salvinis that are mid-sized or larger (3 inches or larger) because I found that I have a lot greater success with cichlids that are bought at over the 3 inch mark.

they used to be everywhere here in oz 2 years ago too but now they have vanished from the scene. I had a nice maleI gave to the LFS as it was causing havoc in my tank, sort of wish I kept him now.

if I was youand you want themthis much I would pay the cost and get some from tangled up in cichlids or somewhat similar. You will get good quality fish from a reliable source, not just random fish from a chain store.

Honestly I wish we had something like them here, it would give so much more choice and quality than what I’m used too. It’s probably something you may take for granted but it’s a good source of fish that not everyone has access to so you might as well take advantage of it.

I live in Australia so dont have the slightest idea of the cost of shipping live fish in the USA!
Its only a few clicks on their website to find out i imagine, the reason i mentioned them is a lot of members on here speak very highly of them and i occasionally look at their website and dream of what I could buy if i lived in america.

Salvini are quite commonly seen at the LFS in my area, Oklahoma. Not very expensive either.
I believe the Salvinis here are supplied by Segrest hatcheries, a huge national distributor.
It's been my experience that Salvini are very hardy if provided an environment similar to that of an African rift tank. Hard, very clean water w/ elevated PH, 8.0 - 8.2.
IMO, I don't think the Salvini are as adaptable to varying water parameters as other New World Cichlids. Might explain the death of the OP's juvenile Salvini.

Shipping costs are by weight, and miles.
The shipping cost per box from TUC to Milwaukee, usually ran about $50.
But in the midwest salvini were fairly common depending on who was breeding them at the time.
There seemed to be someone in our aquarium club that always had juvies, although because of their high aggression potential, grow outs often reduced their own numbers quickly.

Are Salvinis in general less hardy than other cichlids? The cichlids that I currently have are convict, firemouth, blood parrot, Green terror, jewel, peacocks, and a yellow lab. Are salvini cichlids the same hardiness as any of the cichlids I currently have or are they weaker than the ones I listed?

How much do you think the shipping from TUIC to Eastern Mass costs?
Also why do you think salvinis are rare in NE region?
