well silica comes in many diferent grits

at my work me carry 16 grit - 60 grit silica 16 has large grains of sand and 60 is sike as fine as sugar

I was always told to stay away from silica sand it is glass after all and can irritate a rays underside...buy natural sand.

well silica sand is not glass silica is a natural san all it is is quartz 100% natural yuo can get treated silica sand but it is not comen at all silica sand is 100% safe I use it in all my tanks and I sell it every day

i just put silica sand in my tank i got the sand from menards for 3 dollars and it came in a 50 pound bag

i went to home depot this afternoon during my lunch break to check out the playsand everyone is talking about. pretty cheap, about $5.00 for 50lbs bag. so i started reading what is written on the bag about the sand, not much info except one thing.

it has a disclaimer regarding the sand that "the materials is known to cause cancer in studies" and i thought this cant be safe for fish.

anyone else who bought these remember seeing this on the bag???

Since I got into stingrays I am looking for a place to get aquarium sand. I have seen alot of aquarium sand but it always is geared towards saltwater tanks and I am worried it will put possibly harmful minerals being in my low in mineral amazon ray tank. Should I be worried and if so where can I get some FW aquarium sand?

Thanks

those minerals arent gonig to hurt your rays period

as long as the water is clean and warm you wont have any problems

Yeah the minerals won't hurt the rays, but the Aragonite-based sand might.. It can be abrasive, and anything with 'crushed coral' can be a problem.

Not to mention calcium-based sands will raise the pH of the tank. It might help with his alkalinity, which is a good thing, but if his tap water has a naturally low pH he could be causing a major shift with each large water change he did.. If this was the case, you would just have to do more small water changes more frequently..

well, now I am not so much looking into sepcific aquarium sand because its way expensive when there is cheap sand at home depot and lowes. Is there any way to find out if a bag of sand is silica based? And the possible this product may cause cancer warnings authenticity.
