Whichever basket you use first for your bio media. The blue pad stops the bio media from being clogged. The most efficient way is to have all baskets with bio media and the blue pad on the top basket.

I agree they should go in the garbage. They clog WAY too quickly and I don't like taking apart a huge heavy filter every week... Well I might if the blue pads really did much for water clarity, but IME they don't.

I'd stick them in the Garbage bin ...useless things that just clog up and restrict flow.

The Pads are not garbage they work great which is why the clog up. The reason for putting them in the bottom basket under the media is so air does not get trapped under it.

Isn't 6 foam pads enough mechanical filtration already?

If you don't mind floating particles and your bio media getting clogged, then just use the outer foam pads. If you want fairly particle free water and your bio media to last indefinite period of time, then the blue pad is beneficial.

The white pads are the ones that clog quickly, but even Hagen recommend not using them for continuous use.

Those saying they have to change the blue pad every week as they clog have setup issues. I find funny that most users can go 6+ weeks without a change and less than a handful of people only a week.

The only reason why I'm using the blue pads is because my biomax gets clogged big time. Most of them are brown already, it's only been 3 months. So it seems to me, the 6 outer foam pads are not doing a good enough job of filtering the debris.

+1 that they are garbage

they clog up the filter so quick. I wasted so much time with those things.

i'd say they are great for any other filter except the fx5.
