Illegal in Australia? i though they were legit.

Best practice is always to go to the farm and choose your own fish. If you want to ensure that you are getting specific color morph you have to buy an adult (or sub-adult) specimen - which kinda takes the fun out of the raising the fish

In Australia Arowana are illegal and can't be imported because of their CITES listing. The farmed fish and the industry are not recognised in Australia and buying from farms is believed to increase the demand for the fish and further threaten wild populations.

Fish are offered for sale in Australia qute often I just question how do you know the quality of what your getting and where it actually came from.
The certificate and chips don't seem to mean much is the fish are illegal and their is no way of proving the ligitimacy of the fishs origins.
I think it's a case a buyer beware.

Hmmm, going and choosing one yourself does not really work since there is quarantine issues in Ozland ... i am sure i saw some aussie MFK members with asian aros or were they NZ?

We have one "farmer" on MFK - (Koji) from Pan Long. Perhaps do a search on his thread - you will find quite a lot of harvesting photos. Brooders look quite stunning.

I guess like buying everything from internet - there is an element of risk. need to buy from reputable ones. The some of the ones mentioned by Hao are the big (and more well known) farms around

Actually the cert and the chip means a lot. Without them, they are illegal to keep or sell to anyone. That's why it needs to have a cert to determine which type of asian aro and what farm it came from. The chip is to identify the number that matches the cert. The cert and chip also proves that they are legit. Even though they have cert and chip, some countries like the US won't allow them in the country. Some asian aro that are being sold have no chip, and sell them to people and let them think it's legal becuase it will have a fake cert sometimes. Make sure you buy your aro from a reputable farm.

Exactly...they are illegal so what are you going to do, complain to who if your $3000 HBRTG is not what they claim it to be.
Who can check your certificate or chip in Australia??

Apparently LFS that sell asian aros legally must have a chip reader in order to demonstrate that what you buy is what is said on the certificate (i got certs but no reader - well, i am in Laos) Like all things bought by mail, there is a risk that what you get is not exactly what you thought you would get - hence the need to buy from some one you can trust.

the problem with asian aros is that they are fairly similar (or hard to tell color morph) when small, like i said before - if you want a confirmed color morph then you must buy an adult fish ... $$$$ my friend's uncle got a red for USD 7,000 - sure, it is red (as red as they come)

At those sizes you can already tell the quality of the fish. And why would he sell the fish and only show pics to those serious buyers? Looks like a scam. I'm not sure how much is the currency rate in Australia, but if it's in Canadian dollar I won't spend $8500 for a 58cm CR and $3000 for a RTG. I would get it from the reputable farm and grow them out. Cheaper too and it will only take about 2-3 years to make them grow to that size. I could buy a Platinum xback for that price. Lol!:D

Qian Hu for me as well as the best Farm, sorry for being biased hehe...although through browsing sites and checking out specimens from some of the people that I know that have Kaiju Arowanas, Kaiju is good although Kaiju is not a farm per se but rather a proprietorship that specializes in "Handpicking" and LEGALLY importing/exporting TOP GRADE Asian Arowanas of all types (even green) from all the reputable farms all over Asia. the owner (Mr.Admon Tan) has an extensive experiences when it comes distinguishing TOP Grade arowanas being a fomer manager of Imperial Palace Arowana Farm (basically, he knows what he's doing hand picking these fellas)...

One more thing, I personally like the name kAIJU because in japanese "KAIJU" means

]V[ O N S T E R, so, I guess its safe to say this a good place to get a guaranteed beautiful monster fish ...KAIJU also means: K (Keen in Quality) A (Authenticity) I (Intuitive to Demand) J (Justifiable Price/Service) U (United with Customers/Suppliers). :) Just my Honest opinion
