drop eye is like the worst thing to know your fish is going to have when it grows up... atleast a 85% chance of it happening.

so what species can i get that will never ever get drop eye?

jardinis? africans??

If you want an arowana that NEVER get drop eyes, get a Sculpture Arowana ;)

Any aro can get drop eye, but it can be avoided if your aro is fed a healthy diet. Aros fed only feeders are more likely to get drop eye. Feed your aro either pellets (specialized for aros) or insects and you shouldn't have any problems.;)

the best guess is when the aro jumps and hits there head the damage causes there eyes to get bruised and pop out downwards. Some members on here witnessed there aros get drop eye right after they jumped and hit there head. Also explains why aros in ponds or in the wild don't get drop eye.

Isn't it because in a tank, they have nothing to look at, but where as in the amazon river, silver arowanas look up at trees and branches for bugs/food.

If I see it again, with my camera ;)

some aro store owner told me that try to turn on the light on while feeding and enjoying your view of your aro other times turn it off.. i will prevent the aro to have drop eye.. his explainition was that you don't like to have an intense light near your eye for a very long time. if light is on all the time you would like to look away so think that is the same case for aro.

healthy has nothing to do with feeders.

but i actually know one cause of drop eye is impact. i fed my tank some small fish and when the aro wants to eat one, they aren't very graceful. they corner the small fish and lunge at them and i think this is the equivalent of jumping and bruising since they whack the glass every time they strike at a cornered feeder (which almost always happens).

and before somebody turns on the old broken recording of an answer like "feeders are unhealthy and full of parasites... you should always feed them plastic, carrots and fruit blah blah" not true. for the fact that you don't know what a feeder is unless i specify. but i use convicts and mosquito fish / swordtails if you wanna know. my tank is a growout so my arowana doesn't get sucked in by the numerous big fish in the pond. btw, whats gonna stop them from eating fish once he's in the pond?

id also like to see pics of the liechardti with DE.
