Which bio media would you use?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I will be the first to admit i've never actually put much thought into the brand / type of media i put in my filters...

I mean i will look at the media itself and see if its pourous etc, but other than that, i just pickup what i think will work, which happens to be ceramic rings...

But now after reading this, might consider trying matrix or something else depending on whats available...

^ Purigen i have used in the past, and still use from time to time if i really want to polish my tanks water...

But most of the time dont use it coz get too lazy to recharge it :p

Haha it's cheap enough to just replace!

For me its a case of yes and no...

Its cheap to replace if i can buy the large containers of Purigen, but over here, allthe LFS' that used to sell large containers have closed down, so if i buy it, i have to buy the small packets which is crazy...

Seems like everyone has a preference to certain media. I use fluval rings at the moment but wonder if I can get better results with matrix. Should be a interesting test. I'll use it in one tank and leave my other alone to see the difference. Thanks for everyone's input

I used to use bio max and then got on this kick of trying out all this "new fancy stuff". I replaced it with a mix of Marine Pure Cermedia, Sera Siporax, and Bio Home. The conclusion I came up with..... It's a waste of money lol. I believe most of us tend to use far more media than necessary to begin with, so the large surface area on these medias becomes redundant. And in my opinion, media that claims denitrification is B.S. (at least as far as being able to see a difference with your typical at home test kit.)

Can not go wrong with pot scrubbies, the amount of surface area they have most media can not compare

I use bioballs lol. Ive not had any issues keeping up with bio. I added Matrix just to experiment for denitrifying BB and nitate...the jury is out. Im not holding my breath.
