Which Brand of Glass Tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
its interesting to me that the Perfecto's in your area are more expensive.

in my area (ontario canada) Aqueon is more expensive and my LFS orders the Perfecto's because 'they are the cheapest ones'. even though most are not as well built as the Aqueons, customers just want the most inexpensive tank..

I had to special order my aqueon 150 as a result.

That's good to hear, I think I will probably go with the Aqueon 210.

The Perfecto/Marineland doesn't seem to have any real advantage and the price difference is fairly substantial. I imagine shipping factors in hugely in the price of big tanks - I don't know where either are built.

Not offended. Just asking. My lfs shop also recommends Aqueon. Not because of bigger profit margin. They actually make less money off of Aqueon than Marineland.

Cool. What really made my decision (besides the price) is the fact that the Marineland 220 has the corner overflows and it would mess up the end view of the tank. I am about fairly sure I will go with Aqueon, unless I dig deep and go with a 72x30x30 3/4" thick tank from the FishTankFactory.

Your info says you're in Rip City - Do you live in Portland?

whatever you do, try not to sacrifice quality for pricing.

its not worth it.

go with a quality tank, even if it is more expensive. especially with the larger tanks.

quality is first priority (within reason).

for example, I think that 3/4" glass is probably overkill, 5/8" is fine.

but if you have the cash, thicker is always better :)

one thing to consider as well is that if you do end up going with 3/4" thick glass all around, a 72x30x30 tank made that thick will probably need a hoist to move.

it would probably weigh about 700-800 pounds.

very difficult for humans to move safely :)

perhaps they could build it in place for you?

I agree 100% about not going cheap when it comes to a 1 ton+ glass box full of water in the living room. ;) That is one of the reasons I wasn't sure whether the Perfecto tank would be better (it costs 40% more around here), but hearing the good feedback on Aqueon makes it seem like it may be the better AND cheaper choice.

I did some quick math on the 72x30x30 - it comes out to 57.5 square feet of 3/4" glass, multiply that by 10.2 pounds/square foot and you get about 590 pounds. It's heavy, but not impossible with four strong guys - or three strong guys and me - I'm no giant, but I don't mind straining my back a bit. :grinno: I really want the bigger tank, we'll see how the tax man treats us as far as a return...

Yes sir. Right outside of Portland. I'm actually in Beaverton. Where is your location? Wouldn't mind checking out another MFK members tank.

I think you will definately need more than 4 people to move a 600 pound tank.

most on the boards use 4 people to move 220's around and they weigh around 350 give or take..600 pounds is going to be tough.

play safe. don't forget that a back injury can haunt you for life..

hopefully you won't have to deal with any stairways in moving the beast
