Which Catfish Should I Get?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd advise against pictus cats... They tend to get large and get so crazy about food it can prevent other fish from eating.

I really like Eruptera......really active and they seem not to bother anyone....they get big enough to be interesting......about 8 inches I think......but not too large. Love mine!

That's not bad at all, I'll have to look more into them. Do you know their scientific name? Google isn't really showing anything for "eruptera catfish".

I have 3 pictus cats in my 55g. Don't see much of them during the day but at night you can see them zooming around the tank. They are pretty awesome looking fish and gobble down huge amounts of food if they can. They don't really interact much except for fighting if one tries to get in the others hiding spot.

See I read this about Pictus cats and it instantly pushes it down to the bottom of my list. However, there seem to be mixed reviews about Pictus's and I'll have to look more into them.

A few featherfin catfish or a school of corys would be cool since they stay small

i have a bumble bee [marble] catish :)

stays hidden but gulps down sinking carnivore pellets like crazy! :D

and from what lil i know, they dont grow big

I have posted this before but I have a Pictus, striped raphael and African Featherfin. I love the all, and the seem to break the mold with behavior patterns seen, first they all love eachother, swim and play together, they all make noises, My pictus has ADHD sometimes but he rarely even hides day or night, Striped raphael was shy at first (about a month) but he now is just like to other fish in my tank because he will come out when he knows I'm there (I equal food), and my African Featherfin (Synodontis eupterus) is comical, he swims slow but when he gets startled or wants to tackle my pictus (they playfight in a rolling ball of comical destruction sometimes) he can swim faster than any fish I have ever seen. I highly reccomend any of these catfish.

I'm trying to stay away from cats such as corys. Not a huge fan of them myself.

I'll have to look more into that guy, not too fond of them myself.

This is what I'm talking about with mixed reviews. First someone says "they're great". Next, someone decides to say "don't get". Now you come along and say how great the Pictus is with other cats and my brain just doesn't wanna think anymore. :nilly: I'm still going to look into them.

As of right now, I'm really thinking about going with the Eclipse cat. Fell in love with the big one at my LFS and I have a bud that could take him in when he gets too big for my tank.

Still open to suggestions, though. I don't plan on getting a cat for the next couple of days. By the way, is it weird that my oscar is actually the least aggressive fish in my tank? All the oscar does is wait for me to feed him. The firemouths and convicts are always chasing each other and the tiger barbs around the tank :p
