The open water predators would be my guess too. Their eyes are positioned higher on their head allowing for better line of sight. But does anyone have a preference as to which one may be more superior in vision. Or are There any personal experiences where they witnessed their fish stalking or noticed u from along ways away?
i think in captive for hobby, every fish is able to see beyond the the room. But Im sure they are more keen of seeing small things because they find food in dirt and gravels.
I've never kept any cichlas, would you have an example as why?
A few weeks ago a fly got into my house and I was trying to kill it except I had a heck of a time seeing it to catch it. I noticed while I was chasing, my male umbee was swimming back and forth following it I mean I couldn't see it so I watched my umbee to show me where it was LOL he even tried eating it thru the glass When it got too close I thought this awesome and hilarious at the same time. And since then I've been curious as to how well they Can actually see. Also since I've been keeping fish I've been trying to understand fish psychology LOL to help With pairing, tankmates etc. Its a long shot but I've already noticed lots of trends in behavior.
That's easy; their lighting fast speed. All that striking speed is no good without the eyesight to match. And from my experience, when these guys strike, they don't miss. They're on target 100% of the time at full speed.
Here's one of my old feeding vids. Watch the goldfish disappearing act
