Which Cichlids to Add

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i actually think the opposite, lol. i would think that with breeding pairs you would have to lower the stocklist because they would need more space because of their more aggressive nature during breeding, i keep all male tanks and usually dont have many problems, the one time i did have aggression issues was when my JD was starting fights because he had paired with a female GT i happened to have in the tank at the time, one female and it threw the whole tank out of balance, so i think you would do well to have a male only tank like i and many other members on here keep, we have found that without a female to fight over the males actually tend to be not as aggressive as they would be if they had something to fight over

but yeah i think you will have to watch them as they mature though since there are fish of varying aggression levels, you will just have to watch and make sure that the milder ones aren't being picked on, and if you like the blue colors then i would definitely add in a carpintis rather than a cyano, i particularly like the vontehillo variant, pictures really do not do these guys justice, they look all greenish in their pics but really they are a gorgeous dark blue color that IMO can't be beat, the escondidos are nice too but IME the vontehillos get a nicer darker color, and they color up alot sooner than Escons do

Thanks for the replies guys.

I like the carpintis vontehillos and think that it actually the fish available here in the LFS's.

My idea was not to stock all the previously mentioned fish, but rather to sort through options I prefer and come to a nice stocklist of colorful CA cichlids.

Ok so carpinitis and flowerhorn are fish I am looking at for blue.

What about red? And orange? Red shoulder? Not a fan of midas so looking for something else.

Red oscar?

That sounds tempting but I am willing to forgo the argentea for more colorful cichlids less likely to throw my tank into disarray.

I would love to see a picture of yours though Sarah88.

i just did a water change so my water is messy but once it clears up i am due for a good growth thread on him and need to try out how my new camera takes fish pictures lol :naughty:

but yeah as far as reds go, you could do either a red oscar or maybe even red severum if you can find one aggressive enough to hang with the other cichlids, im not experienced with them but i think super red texas are on the same aggression level as most FH in that once mature they pretty much have to be in a solo tank, you may be able to get away with it if you add him last and smaller than everyone else so they keep him in check but its still a risk. festae get too aggressive though you may be able to get away with a lone female, but then i def wouldnt do the oscar or sev, they just couldnt hang with her

you could even do some red hook silver dollars as dithers and that would get you some nice red

oh and the wild form snooks that ira has right now will look gorgeous when older, check out the thread on them and see a vid of the adults they look really cool, there is also a red form of them that is more common but i dont particularly care for those, and those would be more peaceful

Younglin I thought about a red oscar but would prefere to try and find a "hot" albino tiger or a wild caught oscar if I do get one.

I love the idea of a super red texas but have been unable to find small ones here and the large ones are still way overpriced. I have never really to fond of festae don't know why as they are beautiful. How would a red bay snook (albino) hold up in a tank like this?

I am not really looking at dithers are the moment but if i do get one or two it would probably be albino tinfoils for the yellowish coloration and red finnage.

I really like Vieja synspila. Found this picture online:Red Headed Cichlid.jpg

Greenterra has really been an inspiration for my wanting to change the tank. I realise his is 88g and mine is less than half that but would like a similar effect. If possible.

yeah i dont know how the snook would fair with the jag but they get pretty big, ive never had one though so not sure but from what ive read they are fairly mild but can hold their own and with their size probably not too much would mess with them lol, but yeah the synspilums are nice, paratheraps breidohri (sp?) are a really nice rainbow colored cichlid that would be nice in your tank

I really like that paratheraps breidohri and will read up a bit on them and check Taiwan availablity.

The paratheraps breidohri seems to be a rather aggressive cichlid not even getting along well in a pair. Is this right?
