I think the question is, why do you have so much lighting over #1 if you are only using silk plants and not real ones?

I didn't vote. I think you need to rethink your substrate. When I had my two big jags. and sand they wanted to do nothing but move it around. Once I got rid of the jags the tank was alot more calm I didn't have to move the sand back every 3-5 days. So tank out the sand add larger river rock and few fake plants whit a black background is wha tI would do.

The lighting in #1 is the same as the lighting in #2 and #3 . 2- 4 foot dual shop lights with Aqua Glow Bulbs.
The reason it looks so bright in the first two pics is because it's reflecting off the bright background.
Thats one of the things that turns me off about set-up #1 and #2.

I have had tanks with bright backgrounds before, and they cause my fish to loose there color. They just look really drab against a bright background. On Black, they look wonderful.
But this is as much a center piece of our den as it is a fish home.
So all things must be considered.
Good looks as a center piece for the room, and liveability for the fishes.

This is the first time I have ever used sand. So I dont know what to expect yet. I really like the look so far.
But if it becomes a pain in the rear, I have 300 lbs of Petsmart River Pebbles on standby.
The fish I have now do not seem to care about substrate they are living in now. They never move it or dig in it.
But we will see about the sand.....Soon I hope.
