Which dithers are most hardy

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
With 1 or 2 inch cichlids I like pack of tiger barbs, like some people already said Giant danios and tiger barbs. but my favorite with small cichlids are congo tetra, super active and pretty, especialy at feeding time they get right in there and are gone. i like like 7 or 8 of them they streak up to the surface from all different angle and the cichlids dont even no what happened.

Australian rainbows, giant danios and tiger barbs are a good schooling dither choice. Tinfoil barbs and silver dollars get too big, produce a lot of waste, and are very jittery.

ok i will get some dovii as dithers. hahaha!! i got some tinfoils. i was going to get some giant danios but the ones they had were tiny and would be cichlid food for sure. the tinfoils were decent sized so i got them.

Get a group of Silver Dollars as large as you can afford. Get the Red Hook type or the Black Barred Metynis type. No matter how big they are they wont harass your Cichlids but at the same time they can take alot of abuse. In the end your FlowerHorn will be the sole survivor of that tank. Its a hybrid and they just dont play by the same rules as a natural fish. Most pet shops keep em alone in their own tank as they grow older. Good luck Monsta.

I disagree with the silver dollar dithers as "tough". I have an epic thread on the wimpiest Jaguar cichlid on MFK refusing to defend itself against ANYTHING. Long story short after three failed attempts at housing the Jag with other fish I have it in a hospital tank recovering from injuries.

Petsmart has a $1 Silver Dollar sale going and I bought a couple. The hospital tank is also my QT tank. It is already medicated for the Jaguar, so I thought it would be perfect and solve two problems for me.

1. It would treat the two new silver dollars for parasites prior to being added to a community tank.

2. I was hoping that the Jaguar might gain a little much needed confidence back during feeding time and be able to successfuly "bully" the two silver dollars for food.

Well, I placed the two silver dollars ~ 2.5" in with the ~ 6" Jaguar. The Jaguar moved faster then I have ever seen him move. The first Silver dollar was killed within like 2 seconds, and before I could even get the net back into the tank to salvage the second, the jag killed it too.

They did NOT get eaten, and I will get replacements today, but they did not last a total of 10 seconds with the worlds most timid 6" Jaguar!
