Hello,
I have a 75 gallon tank that i have malawi peacocks in, there are 19 in there right now. I'm going for an overstocked all male tank to cut down aggression. I am useing 2 marineland biowheel 400's and they do a good job at filtering, but im not happy with the noise, and frequency that i have to change the pads. I was thinking about getting an Eheim 2217 to replace them, i hear that they are quiet "19db" and i will not have to change media as often. I plan on getting a few more guys in there so the tank will have a heavy bio-load. Will this Ehim 2217 be enough filtration or do i need to find another?? I have been trying to find a nice guide that lays out the different bio-load capabilities and flow rates of various eheims in one place but i wasnt successful so i decided to bring it to the pro's. Any help would be Most appreciated, thanks in advance.

I'm no pro, but I am running 2 Eheim 2236 canisters (got them from petsmart for 30 bucks a piece, mistake on their part) and they are incredable, quiet and extremly effeciant. This probally does not answer your question, but for dependability, efficiency and quietness I like my Eheims...I'm running a 125 ATM

It will depend on how often you want to turnover the tank volume, the 2217 will do around 208 GPH filter turnover so that will be just over 2.5 x turnover.
I use a 2078e and 2028 on my 110, the 2078e would give you just under 4x turnover but will be more expensive.I think the 2078e has the most powerful pump in the eheim range rated at 1850 LPH but filter turnover is 1100 LPH,except for the 2260/2262
I prefer to use two filters anyway as if one breaks I have a back up running.
If you want more than about 4 x you will be looking at a fluval FX5 I would think or a 2262 from eheim both of which are beasts in the filter world, although the 2262 would be my choice.

I know the fx5 would work great but my tank is 4 feet from the head of my bed so the 45db would be a little to loud. The 2262 is a little high in price aswell .

Unfortunatly if you want high turnover from one canister filter then those are the options, you could just buy 2x 2217 as that will give you around 5x turnover plus the redundency if one stops working.I always use two filters for that reason.I have always used eheim and cannot fault the two I have now.
Although my new tank will have a sump and canister as i just cannot get the turnover I want with canisters unless I pay around £750 which is just silly money.

i got 2 eheim 2217's on my 135. i leave the spray bar open ended and it pushes out a lot of water compare to not open ended...and when i say open ended i mean i take off that lil cap at the end of the spray bar so the main water comes out from the end and some from the lil holes. so ill say go with 2 eheim 2217's. you can find them used for half the price of the new ones.

Howdy,

For a 75 gal, you'll need 2x 2217. They're awesome filters, go for it

Bedroom aquariums always cause concern for sound. But I'd use an FX5 and build a Sound Box. Basically build a box out of Plywood that the FX5 can sit into then fasten a lid to it with slots for the hoses. The trick is lining the box with something that will dampen the sound. Acoustipack, or Dynamat might work well for this application. On the lid make sure you line the whole lid with the Dynamat or Acoutipack and cut slits in the material, That way the hoses get wrapped with the material making a seal of sorts.

Hell, if your good with wood you could build the whole thing into a Nightstand of sorts with a drawer for supplies.

I've lined an aquarium stand with that Egg carton foam you find in Packaging boxes and it helped with sound as well.
