Just for a bit of extra input, I sleep pretty close to an FX5 and I can't hear it at all. I have to put my hand on it to feel the pump running to tell if it's still on.

I might have to look into an fx5 i was makeing coices on the info that i got from specs, they said that eheim 2217 = 19 db and the fx5 was at 45db. I dont know what that would be in an insulated box though i will have to look into that aswell.

Yes the 2217 will take care of a 75 gallon tank. I used one for several years on a 75 gal. But I would go larger if you have the funds maybe a Eheim classic 2250, or 2260
