Which filter system is better for a 300g freshwater set-up: sump or canister?

I have a FX5 and a 100GL Sump under my 300GL tank. But if I had to choose one, I would go with the Sump Hands Down!!

Both? You mean you have the sump and the FX5 hooked up to the tank at the same time? Both systems cleaning the tank at the same time?

We take it a step further on our 300 gallon tank. Wet/dry filter for biological filtration, 2 spa filters run with a Reeflo Hammerhead pump for extreme mechanical filtration, an FX-5 for redundant filtration with a 40W UV sterilizer connected to the return line of the FX-5.

I do agree with most of the previous posters--that a wet/dry trickle filter provides great biological filtration for large tanks. You can also incorporate a strong mechanical component in your wet/dry filter.

I have a sump on my 315 that I built from a 55g tank and it works fine for me. My tank is salt but the functionality is the same. I also use a canister I have laying around from time to time if I decide to run some carbon. The inlet and outlet for the caniseter are on my sump, not the tank itself when I use it.

Like many here, I run a sump and canister on my larger tank. For a 300gal tank, a sump is your best option due to cost, volume, and versatility. If you've never run a sump before, read up on the many sump threads on this forum and get yourself set up.

Sump as main unit, a canister to help with circulation/mechanical and if main unit fails for what ever reason.

That is also a good point. I run a sump and an xp4 on my 90. Also a sump allows you to hide your heater.

Theres a 40 or so gallon sump and 2 Fx5s on my 300 gallon. Im also putting in 2 AC 110 powerheads for extra water movement.

Hi, I'm new here. I found this forum while trying to find a replacement power filter. I have a 125 g tank with a 23" clown knife. I had a tetratec pf500 but it died. Anybody got a suggestion for a replacement. I really can only use the kind that hang over the side. Thanks for you help.
