Which fish are easier to keep: firemouth cichlids or convict cichlids?(Also please give tips lol)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The Pearl cichlid would get bigger than the Con so a non starter.
I mentioned the African Red eyed tetras as dithers for Jewel cichlids. They are from the same areas in the Congo River, and don't get as huge as Congo tetras that I think would outgrow a 29.
+1 i think pearls get around 8-10”

The tanks look great! Anyways, I think I'll do a HDP but I'm still deciding what type of dish to use as dither fish. Also, how many dither fish should I add?

Depending on what you pick, I’d say 5-7. My red eye aren’t real active except at feeding time or if I get near the tank, they usually hang out in a group and meander. So with those I think 7 would be ok

This is my group of Bleeding Hearts. The pic is about the size of a 29gal to give you an idea of adult size in your tank.

With tall bodied Tetras I would go with 6 or so. Swordtails I would go with 4 female 1 male. Platys go 6 female 1 male. Smaller Tetras like Neon or Cardinals go 10, but expect to lose a couple over time possibly ?

Convicts and hrps are virtually the same as far as care goes, same for most of the amantitlania fish (or cichlids once classified there).
I would say 5-7 Buenos Aires tetras are a great dither, but if you are looking for something more geographically correct, get swordtails. Cichlids will clean up excess fry.

I thought Buenos Aires tetras need at least 30 gallons for a group of six by themselves?
