Which fish to go?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The thing is here is why buy a fish that can get 5 feet then have to rehome in less than a year. And that's just one fish. It's a mistake I get it, he will learn like others and get new fish. It happens.

Also not always true about rehoming large fish. Oscars and Pacus are notoriously extremely hard to get rid of and that's just 2 fish.

Yeah, im learning as I go along. I do have knowledge about fish and water quality, etc. What im lacking is personal experience with a new tank. I work at a lfs store and take care of the fishroom, granted those tanks have been up and running for 5+ years. So taking care of the fish is pretty easy, ich here and there, a little body fungus but very little disease in the tanks. I didnt realize how different an established tank is comapred to a very new tank lol. We have catfish (5 inches at most in length) in our tanks and our tanks are like 15 or 20 gallons but they're all hooked up on a commericial system and their water parameters are perfect! Which led me to believe that it wouldnt be hard to control the water parameters, i was so, so ,wrong! Like I said, this is my first tank and im realizing how everything affects one another.

the fish he has wont be too hard to rehome. If you keep large fish theres always someone out there who will want them
Not always true. It depends greatly on the type of fish, your location, and your willingness to ship. Like mentioned above, Pacu, Oscars, and large catfish are some of the most common fish that are hard to rehome as adults. Craigslist proves this point. As a matter of fact, there is a guy near me that is giving away a free RTC. It's too big for his 55. But no one has taken it for months. Now if he had posted this fish in another city with a bigger demand and body of hobbyist it would probably be long gone by now. The OP has the info he needs to learn from this mistake and it sounds like has done just that. Now he'll start having the dreams that the rest of us have; Bigger and Better tanks! Good luck with your new stock.

I would get rid of them all. Their all going to outgrow that tank,
Finish Cycling the tank.
Here is what you can stock it with.... keeping it with the S. American theme, seeing you like rtc, shovelnose, etc..
- Leopard Ctenopoma
- Sydontis Catfish and Cories
- Angelfish
- Senegal Bichir
- S. American Bummblebee cats

The list goes on and on.

Bigger and better tanks for sure!! LOL. When I build my next year, depending how much space is availbale. I want to build either a 400, 600, 800 or 1000gallon tank. Bottom line, if I have the space, I will go with the larger tank. I want to keep these fish for life, they truly are amazing! Im also kicking around the idea of a pond, I like keeping an open mind. I will also make sure that the tank/pond is cycled lol. Yeah, I'm just going to leave it be for now. Thanks guys for all your help. The rtc is gone and my fish, along with the tank are doing good :D. Thanks again!
