I have a 240 long (8x2x2) that houses a Silver Arowana and 10 Polypterus of different species. I was going to keep it totally prehistoric and add some knifefish, but they always get taken out by something.

I want some more color, so I tried to put my 14" FH in there, and he chased the Arowana as soon as he hit the water. So, I was thinking something that gets big enough to not get eaten, but not so aggressive that it chases my Arowana. I was thinking Datnoids or Frontosa, but they are expensive to "test" in the tank.

I added some small 2-3"cichlids (Jewels and Jacobfredi) to see how the big guys react to them. There are still two Jewels left after a week, but one of the Jewels and all the Jacobfredi were eaten.

I know both Dats and Fronts are not explosive in their growth rate, so I would have to find some decent size specimen, which will cost A LOT. I don't want to drop all the coin and then have a problem with the fish.

Also Dats and Fronts like specific water params, my other fish aren't as picky. So I have a lot to consider with these fish.

Of course my brain is stuck on these two options....so I need some fresh ideas to consider.

What would you put in my tank?

I would probably add some green terrors. my GT is very peaceful and has lots of green/blue(but some are aggressive) also Red spotted gold severums.

You could possibly get some sort of gar....

I thought about that, but I like the Arowana to have the surface to itself, it really glides. Also Gars need feeders. I feed market shrimp.

I like the GT's, but I have had some NASTY ones that harassed EVERYTHING.

Are those Severum expensive? Do they grow quickly?

gars dont need feeders, almost every gar i have seen has never even eaten a feeder in its life, they readily accept most foods you put in the tank. my spotted gar eats shrimp and pellets mainly. try some severums, they are colorfull and pretty peacefull for cichlids. ohh and cheap!

i would try a dat. or maybe some big bala sharks. something that would take the middle layer. sounds like ur tank is a little overstocked already though.

An LFS near me has a little one for 20-30 bucks, but he has it in a brackish tank. I didn't know if they could be kept in freshwater. How long would it take to get 6"?

As far as polys go....I have an ornate, a delhezi, 3 lapradei, 3 senegals, and 2 albino senegals.

I would love a endli or a concigus, but I have to order them from somewhere. The LFS around here never have 'em. Not to mention they don't know what they have. I have 3 laps because they keep getting mislabeled as concigus....from the distributor. I've looked at invoices.

Keep the suggestions coming!!
