I think either tank would be fine up to about 16", with the 5x2x2 you could go longer up til about 22". What are the dimensions of your new 300g you are getting?

The 300 gallon will be 96x30x24, and I will attempt to do several peacock bass (cichla) with the jar. I'm planning on raising the jar with one other fish (maybe datnoid), and avoiding live food to keep aggression at bay. I have heard that by feeding an arowana a light-moderate diet it will grow much slower. I am on track to build a house in hopefully 2, but possibly 3 years so hopefully the tank will suffice until then.

dont mess about with the grow out tanks they will cost you more money just go 6x2x2ft then you should be safe for years if not life

I think I will prefer the life tank to be an 8 footer because I like to watch them swim from end to end. Plus the aro's grow out tank will then become an african cichlid tank for my wife.

does anyone else have an opinion? If I feed the jar a light diet how big would he be at 2 years? 3 years?

if you get a 8ft tank all that will do is give the jar more space to chase the other fish around :D

IMO: hard to say exactly how big he'll be...i fed my Jar a "light diet" for the first 8 monthes from 3", he grew only 3" to 7" :( ...then i switched to power feeding 3 times a day (whenever he was hungy), he grew from 7" to 10" in 4 monthes after that! major growth :D ...now i power feed every other day ;)
the best food i fed was market shrimp...

at this rate i assume my Jar will reach close to 2' in the 2nd year...how big is your Jar now?

^^^totally agree...avoid the live food...and Dats are Jar's best friends! ..check out my avatar :D

for a growout dude get the smallest tank u'll need....if ur gona upgrade when necassary save ya money...for the big tank...

522 will work for a long time...

keep in mind, there are many 522 tanks in asia that house up to 5 asian aros till adult hood......not ideal, but very doable...

832 with bad water, poor diet, poor owner = :(

522 with good water, good food, loving owner = :)

my .02

in 2 years, lucky to hit 20-22"
