well its going in a 90 gallon so for one piranha that should be good, lets say i was to put no plants or drift wood, just sand would that make the P more agresive or just scared

The more natural you make the enviorment the more comfortable the fish.

90 gal. seems like overkill for one of the smallest Piranhas in Maculatus, they can live in half that volume. Plus theres no garuntees a shoal won't kill it's self off as adults with that species. If you want a show piece in a 90 check into Serrasalmus Elongatus "Black Mask" - maybe one of the best and unusual lookin' P's on the market. They get 10" tops and a 90 would be a perfect tank.

i'm leaning towards the elong p, i'm thinking of going to buy it this friday or sat, and dividing my 180 until i set up the other tank, just found out its a 55 gallon, thought it was a 90, but hey it was giving to me by my gf and its complete i just gotta make a diy wet/dry filter and i will be placing the elong in their, will keep everyone posted on the updates, so far its going to be the elong p

cool, can't wait for seeing pix of your new elong. how big are you getting it at?
55g would be fine for a elong as they don't get too big, even a 9"er is rare in captivity.
make sure you got some good current in the tank as they are fast swimmer and current would help it being in a small 4ft glass box.

yea that was my next Q,. how strong of a current do i need, 800gph???

depends on which powerhead you use and the size of the fish.
what size fish are you getting?
personally i like koralia power head, koralia 4 should be good for 55g. it outputs 1200g but very gentle. I used one in my 75g before, have extra one. pm me if you are interested.

Your best bet would be serrasalmus maculatus/spilo
Keep in mind that every p has its own personality but these tend to be the most aggressive i.e fingerchasers.
Elongatus are usually pretty agressive also but sometimes you get one that just sits in the corner.
Exactly what I was going to say!! You can't expect every fish of a certain species to be a finger chaser it just wont happen. BM Elongs are usually aggressive but with finger chasers it's hit or miss.
