The ex-meridionalis are all pretty aggressive compared to the others and your tank doesn't have a really big footprint.

So, I would go with any of the gymnogeny types because they stay fairly small and seem to get along a little better. Maybe 5 of them and a pair of dwarf pikes from Uruguay. Or five of them and a Cichlisoma Dimerus pair or small red ciebal group.

I like the gymnogeny Quilero the best but that is just a personal preference. I would just look through them on aqvaterra.com and see which you like best and then see if you can find someone that has some for sale. Just as an FYI if you see something getting sold as gymnogeny yerbalito it is the same as quilero.

I must admit I like all of the genus. but keep Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys sp Paso Pache, outside in the summer here iin Wisconsin and bring them in in the winter.

Air temps in summer can easily drop in the 40s here, and they seem to roll with it. And it's like getting new fish after bringing them in for the winter.
