which is better longer or tall tank?

150 tall is not a good choice for a bunch of species. 150 tall is more of a display / show tank for a few (2 or so) very large fish, not a bunch of smaller scrappers. There is not enough floor space for everyone to call a spot home so they do alot of fighting. If you were going to fill it with Discus and dithers it would look great, but the stock list you gave, I would go for a 150 (not the tall) or bigger 2' wide 6' long, height not important.
I prefer longer than tall. I only got my 150 because it was given to me 
. If not I would've gone for a 180 or 125. I like length and depth over height. More substrate, more room for fish to swim and turn. I got the 220 intead of a 180 because I wanted to maximize the space I was putting it in. If I could've went longer instead of higher I would've for sure.
