I started out many years ago with the marineland 350's and other than a few complaints I was quite happy with the preformance. The hose connections was a notable headache even with the additional quick disconnect's. I used Eheims twice and was disapointed in each case. Contrary to what I've read I had a constant battery of problems with them.
Sea clears are an old favorite of mine for large set ups. For years a ran a local maintance servace and slowly converted all of the sump systems over to sealed pressure systems using various sea clears...HOWEVER I hesitate to classify them along with the other cannister filters listed here because they require an external pump. That said they are still the best option for large systems.
I use a combination of marineland emporers and fluval 405's on most of our tanks at the moment and I'm very happy with the result. In my mind it's far better to stick with one type (or two in this case) of filter because it's much easer to keep a stock of replacement parts on hand.
The FX5 is easilly the most advanced cannister filter on the market because of the computer controled motor and adaptability not to mention the flow rate per dollar. The motor itself is also easilly replacable although I would have been a bit happier if it was liquid cooled rather than air cooled. That way all of the energy (heat) goes into the water rather than bieng wasted in the air. I'll be using an FX5 on our new tank when it's set up but I'm going to plumb the system myself with pvc rather than use the hosing supplied with the unit.

Eheim 2078 gets my vote for convenience, and as an all-around filter.

Does it really produce a constant flow even after the media continues to become clogged? It claims to do so, however I would like to hear your opinion on it as I'm comtemplating about whether it is worth the money when the Eheim 2028 has a higher GPH rating.

can I vote for "anything other than XP series"?

They're the ones I have experience with (I have 4 of them) and I don't like them at all. They're over rated on flow, ease of maintenance, and reliability.

The 2078 has a rated flow of 490 gph and 13.8L of capacity, where the 2028 has a rated flow of 275 gph and 7.3L of capacity.

I guess PetSolutions have it wrong then.

How is the 2078 on mechanical filtration, is it excellent compared to all the other bio-focused Eheims?

wow, surprused that theres not more eheim votes,

Of course! If the poll was in Europe, you would not have one Fluval vote!!!
