Going the pound for pound route, I'd like to add the dwarf mbuna to the list. P. demasoni in particular are just plain evil when they fully mature. IME, most can't be kept in groups under 12. What they bite comes off in their mouths, scales, fins, eyes... When 2 males lip-lock & break, the snap can be heard across the room on a 3" fish. They ruled my Hap. obliquidens. I had a group of about a dozen fry growing out in a 10 gallon & at about 1/2" they killed the poor S. eupterus I had in there for cleanup duty. He was 2.5". My 3.5" P. saulosi colony killed a 7.5" pleco in a day while I was at work. He was doing OK for a few months & then I moved some rocks cleaning. They resettled their territories & he was no longer welcome...

just wanted to add to this about P. Demasoni a truly amazing fish that should be owned and observed, i kept one for 4 or more yrs and he was one of my all time favorite fish to own he was the only cichlid that could live in a tank with my Red Texas Flowerhorn/Red Terror hybrid by being smart and thru the years dominated many larger fish both African and CA cichlids and always found himself in a quarantine tank to chill out for awhile
he had a special hatred for my JAG and the JAG hated him equally he was mature at 3" the JAG was 6" and mean as hell only bowing down to the hybrid when the 2 lip locked the JAG would have the Demasoni's entire head in his mouth and almost killed him like this but the Demasoni recovered in time and came back pissed with a different strategy making sure never to lip lock but attack from all angles with speed and agility like flying teeth when the jag went into the rock work it was worse for him as the Demasoni would use the rocks to his advantage for quick attacks and escapes i kept thinking the JAG would turn it around but he never did after a while he would not even fight back the Demasoni would randomly bite him at will so i moved one to another tank, true at full grown the JAG would probably just eat the Demasoni like a feeder fish, but any fish that couldn't just eat one would have their hands full, a cool little mini monster that should be checked out, you could do a group in an old 55 gal with the right rock work

From species I've kept, doviis top the list followed by buttikoferis when it comes to dominating multi-species tanks. I have a bunch of baby umbees and they are only 2.5 inches so I haven't seen what they are capable of.

me too =] my 2.5"er is like being aggressive to them pairs on Black Convicts I have in the tank with the 3 umbee's and well havent' seen the full flurry of the mighty umbee! =]

i dont have much experience with africans however i am stocking an african tank presently and i would have to say that pound for pound the demasonis are the rulers of this tank.there in there with some yellow labs and some cobalt zebras and the demasonis put the run on everyone

jags are pretty mean mine rules my tank she takes up almost half the tank when she lays eggs.

my Cobalt Blue attack both my Feather Fin catfish which is 3 times his size and my other electric blue cichild

my motaguense is a MONSTER
