Depends on the individual cichlid and what you consider aggressive.

But on average...
Dovii's can do the most damage, they are built to destroy. They are always prepared for a fight. Though I dont think their really aggressive, they are more territorial than anything.

Red Devil's are highly aggressive to the point where they can kill.

Umbee's are just big giants that love to chase smaller fish, just like green terrors.

Buttikoferi's are usually out going, but only if their the alpha(dominate) one of the tank. Otherwise they will try their very best to get up top, that means fighting non-stop. They are african, but are american inside ;)

Black Nasties are probably the most aggressive American cichlid, they kill other fish as a hobby of their own. They are down right black demons.

The most aggressive cichlid of them all IMO are the mbuna's. Auratuses, chipokae's, kenyi's, and ect are blood thirsty killers. I've seen 4 inch auratuses chase 6-8 inch dovii's forever in my LFS. It's quite sad. Mbuna's are soo small, but are a handful that is packed with murdering instincts.

Fish are like dogs, any 'breed' can be aggressive. I.e if a cichlid or dog is kept alone all its life it will prob be aggressive to another fish or anything in or around its tank or enviroment Which it has claimed as its territory. For so long! Its established its self as king or its land and through fear. Or anger will attack anything in its 'yard'! Socialise most fish from a young age even snakeheads and piranhas and there's a good. Chance they will cohabit with other fish assuming there's enough room! There's a vid of a black piranha fully grown living with giant snakeheads and peacock bass on youtube called black rohm tank I think check it out! After all that I've owned hundereds of cichlids and my three nastiest were 1. Red devil 2. Diff red devil 3. Red top ice blue zebra called capone (malawi)

I've posted on this thread before but since keeping many fish since I said jags were the most aggressive. I now believe the grammodes is the most aggressive. My female lives to fight even with fish 2 feet away who are in another tank. I plan on getting a male and can't wait to see the aggression it has
