I have been thinking about going with live plants for a while now. Fake plants are so... boring, been using the same ones for years now, heh. I have a 135g with a few peacocks and mbuna and was wondering which type of live plants to add to my tank without these guys shredding it up. Looking for a quick grower that I can buy a few of and let them grow out in the tank or a few different kinds. I don't mind if I'd have to trim them down from time to time. Just want to make the tank look more natural.

Haven't had any luck w/ Mbunas not eating live plants. Personally I was okay with it, plants don't cost that much last a month or 2 and are very healthy for the mbunas. One of the drawbacks though is the ever constant floating chewed up debris from the plants, it can get quite messy if not cleaned out regularly. Another is the clay substrate, when the mbunas dig they send numerous clay particles into the water making it cloudy and eventually making it's way into the pumps impellers shortening their life.

Some have gotten away with anubias and java fern.I have some valisinaria in with my tropheus.

My mbuna shreaded my java fern. They didn't really eat it, they just destroyed it. I have heard of onion plants sometimes working as well. It's hit or miss.

Only plant I had in a Mbuna tank was some Java Moss, and they destroyed it.

You will just have to have it a try and see if your fish will let them grow.good luck with that. My fish snatch up my fake plants so I can only imagine with live. I may give it another try later.

anubias and java fern no problem in my tank. I do feed them veggies twice a week.
