which loach would best control snails?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ii think all loaches are pretty good at maintaining snail population.
but personal expeirence my clown loaches will destroy a several hundred snail population in less then a week.

I agree with the above. Clown loaches are the best IMO. Close second is the Yo-yo loach. But they are the only two i've had experience with.

Dojo loaches will too. My dojo tear up snails in no time flat!.. lol

Not all loaches will eat snails. Which species have you tried aside from clown loaches? Hillstreams, kuhlis and horsefaced loaches don't. As for dojos, mine do not eat snails from hatchlings to adults.

If you are looking to eradicate the snails, do not resort to fish as a means to destroy the snails. Cut back on your food supply and they will simply diminish in time. No need to use a fish just for this purpose.

Actually yoyo loaches are far more versatile in consuming snails than clown loaches due to their elongated snout. And for the record, before anyone suggests clown loaches, please ask for the tank size before you do. A lot of clown loaches end up stunted as a result of insufficient accommodations. If you opt to keep loaches in small tanks, see the sticky threads for smaller species with length no more than 6 inches.

I have had success feeding snails to every botiine loach I have had. They aren't guaranteed to eat them, but I dumped a fistful of snails in with Clowns, Yo-yos, Histrionica, Kubotai, and Rostrata. They were emptied of their shells within hours and the fish were still digging in the empty shells.

i dont have room to house a full grown clown loach.:(

and i dont really want to kill every last snail in my tank, i just want to make sure their population is controled and that they dont over take my tank.
