I tried to do some searching and didn't really come up with solid answers and was wondering how others felt my in-tank sponge filters would affect my choice of media for my canister.
Curious what most of you would choose & what order you would put them in. I have two larger sponge filters inside the tank and am running a Fluval 305. It came with some bio media, activated carbon & sponge/floss pads. It also has larger sponges that run the length of the canister on the side. In the trays I put two layers of the sponge pads in the bottom tray (the Fluval ones seem awfully thin for how tall the tray is so that's why I doubled up) which sees the water first after the full-length sponges. I assume at this point it's all mechanical filtration and water polishing with some bb storage which most of it gets cleaned out when I clean the canister. The next two trays are both bio media. I have what would be about three trays worth in the two trays. Again, Fluval includes very little bio media IMO and I had some extra so that's why I decided to overfill these a little more so they're both about half way filled up. I figured that I had plenty of mechanical filtration between my in-tank sponge filters and the floss before the bio media so that's why I devoted two trays to bio media with a little more than Fluval includes for a tray.
How does that sound? Any suggestions or thoughts on this? It's a 72gal bowfront tank with mixed cichlids and is overstocked.
Thanks for the help.
