Which one is the bigger killer, Hoplias Aimara or Channa Micropeltes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So far this is the biggest Hoplias i have ever seen on tape:

starts at 0:40minutes.

definetly a big fish, but you can see the huge difference in size compared to the RTC and the arapaima. Of course both those fish definetly get bigger than any hoplias, but the difference is so big, that i doubt this aimara is over35".

I believe the owner is a member of this site, it was 40kg I remember him saying, it was brought in at that size, and I believe he said it was over 3' but I can't remember for sure

I had a pair of redline once that was 3' male and 2.5' female. Both were active but not aggressive at all. Just hungry. Now I own a 11.5" aimara, aggressive towards me when I walk in the room and can tolerate tankmate. Now my artc is extremely aggressive. That fool won't tolerate nothing in her tank but no aggression towards me at all.

Sorry but i really doubt the aimara in this pic is either 3 feet nor 40kg. Maybe 40lbs yeah would not be the first mix up in the metric-imperial system.

What is a redline? Can you post pictures?

Ah yeah i guess after posting. Sad that there is no pictures, those channa shure are beasts.

But someone mentioned lacerdae to reach almost aimara size - this would be interesting, i have seen pictures of lacerdae which very aimara-liked heads (flat&big eyes) maybe they are closer related than other hoplias.

They are probably most similar to one another hen comparing one to another species yes.

Back than we didn't camera phones, I guess yall don't call Channa micropeltes redlines anymore?
They're still called red lines.

on the weight I can agree with you. But as for length, I would not doubt this fish being 3ft plus. There was a specimen, one of the first larger ones, brought in at 30". If you look up aimara on google it's the one biting the green water hose. Now if that one was 30", looking at this one, which seems to have grown into some features such as the eyes to the point they begin to look small, I would not doubt it having another 6 inches on that other wolf. It just looks much more massive imo.

I bumped the thread in the other characins sub-forum, he stated it was 45 pounds when he caught it

Not shure if i understand, you found the old threat where the owner of the aimara in the vid was talking about the weight? And it was 45lbs? Yeah this seems quite possible and i agree on your argument concerning the lenght.

Maybe the aimara in the vid got even heavier over the last years. But weather or not H.Aimara is capable of really reaching 88lbs/40kg .. i still doubt it. Don't think the fish in this video would be able to double it's weight. (maybe with ridculous overfeeding, but i guess this would work on micropeltes as well).

Yes I found an old thread where he talked about it slightly, go to other characins forum, go down a little it's the thread titled who has the largest wolf. It was 45lbs when he caught it. And I'd agree with your statement arguing whether or not they can reach 40kg, if it is in fact not a fish that reaches 4ft but if it were to reach this size, one could only imagine it gaining double the weight if not more. Cause it wouldn't only be gaining another foot which would add approximately 15lbs or so if it doesn't grow in girth, but it would grow in girth increasing the weight per inch, and would just be a massive fish.
