You dont always need a hood. Personally, I just find that it serves a cosmetic use. Your going to thank yourself if you were to buy the widest, yet longest tank.

can you give me some good examples of tanks without hoods? I don't know how I'd light the tank unless I were to hang the ligh or something. My midas will jump like hell so I wouldn't be able to fill my tank up all the way. Or else I'd put him in it without a hood for a little while. I guess I can throw some ply wood on top of it or something haha.

Why take a chance of losing your fish to jumping? It would be best to have the tank covered, helps with evaporation and also provides a place for a light.

I think (hope) mystics meant "canopy" like in pic one here.....Not hood/lid/top/glass top , like in pic two here......You need pic 2 pic 1 "canopy" is not NEEDED at all it is just for looks.....

i would go with the 65 and the 55, because you get alot of reptile crap you could use make money off of, and it come with light fixtures and if im right a 55 is 48".

I still don't know which one I'm going to get.. I just found a 45gallon for $20! no hood or accessories or anything but its only $20. Once I have the money I plan on having at least 5-6 tanks set up. I don't know if I am going to be able to pass on this one.

Instead of just looking for a good deal. Look for the right size tank for your fish, it is going to continue to grow up to 14". The minimum size tank you need is going to be at least a 75g which has a footprint of 48" x 18". If you do end up buying a tank smaller then that, you will just need to buy another tank later on.
