which one would you believe in temp?

sorry to be a downer but the infared guns are not very good at general temperature measurement....they rely on the emissivity of the object being measured.

eg polished silver reads a very different temperature from flat black....even though both objects ARE the same temperature.

emissivity is a measure of how much infared radiation is given off by an object at a given temperature.....

that is the infared gun readings depend on the object's emissivity.............and hence need to be calibrated to a specific object.....

sorry to be wordy........ but if you have time check my websites...........

www.ptc1.com

we sell and calibrate thermometers to better that 0.010 degrees near room temp...........

I don't like the digital units i had around 8 running at the same time all with fresh batterys and all different readings..
the stick on glass one were the most consistent just count on a few degs difference in reading..
I used a infra red tester to get the exact temp and kept in mind what the difference was ..only 2degs in my case.

the 212F would only be correct at sea level.

I use multiple thermos and check against each other. the one digital I have is real close to the in tank glass type, the biggest varience I have is with the outside stick ons.

I don't see that as a problem, at eye level it's only 21ft here

here water boils at 188 degrees

anyhow I though I would test the calibrating by boiling method on my Coralife digi thermo. Well it did not work above 160 degrees it only readout is "Hi"

 OOoo...a friendly meter...:D

I guess you try the freezing method...I predict a "lo' reading...:D

"johnptc" what do you use to make your mega tank's temp stable? any heater controller (bet you have). any specific type you recomend? i got a 180 gal with large dats and bichirs. stealth heaters are just crazy!!!:irked:

i am using http://www.chromaloxheaters.com/control.htm

chromalox contollers.....but i dont think i would spend that kind of money and time wiring it up for any thing less than than 500 gallons when a couple of high quality heaters from the lfs store should work great.........( i have always liked the jaeger ( spelling) heaters)

I am running 24,000 watts ( 24kw) in the 5000 gallon tank.........they are sump mounted with about 350 gpm running thru the sump.................:screwy: :screwy:

hope this helps.....johnptc
