Tank will be a 120 with 29 gallon sump. 800 GPH powerhead. I'm liking the 2nd design better since there will be better water circulation vs the 1st design which would only take water from the surface.

Use one or more of both so you get the benefits of both. I use 3 of the version on the right on each tank myself, 75 and 65 gallon tanks, 1.5 inch PCV. I'm not worried about skimming, I make the return water cut the surface and mix any scum into the water.

also i ran the set up on the right, on a 75gal tank, 1.5in pvc pipe, 981gph return pump, at 4ft of head it was about 700gph. the 1.5in pvc siphon had no problem keeping up. my siphon break was a few inches under the water line in the tank and it would just about fill up my 20gal sump by the time the siphon would stop flowing.

now with my 120gal and same 20gal sump i might go with the design on the left so the siphon stops as soon as the water level in the tank dips down a bit, im worried about getting the siphon break from the set up on the right, high enough that it will cut flow before it floods my sump. if your siphon break is to close to the water line on the figure on the right, i dont know how well it will flow.

McPish, a powerhead will not work. They are not designed to pump up, they won't build any pressure. They are only made to move water in a tank.
