Which puffer is this?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
SG = Specific gravity (the density of a solid or liquid relative to the density of distilled water). In this case, the amount of salinity in aquarium water.

Fresh water has a SG of 1.000 or below. Brackish water has a SG of 1.002-1.010. Marine conditions (oceanic) are about 1.022-1.030 SG. The breaks between levels account for temp, estuarian conditions, run-off, etc.

the guy who sold me this fella, told me to add in 4 spoon of salt into the 15G tank. and 1 spoon every time i change 20% of the water

If you keep this puffer, it does better in full marine conditions. Use marine salt mix as this contains sea salt, marine minerals and trace elements, and buffers needed to maintain correct pH for marine creatures.

"Clean" water does not mean cycled by any means. I think you are in over your head here... What exactly did you do to cycle this tank? You need to do all the research possible you can on marine tanks & quick!

This is by far not a beginners Puffer fish. This little fella needs to have specific conditions met at all times. Don't take this the wrong way but just by simply not knowing what "SG" is (it's not just a term used on this forum but a term used very widely in the hobby) shows that you are not headin g in the right direction. Thankfully you found a site such as this as soon as you did. Like PP said "clean" water does not mean it's cycled at all. How long was the tank setup and established before you added him in the tank? Which way was it cycled? Do you have any ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings to know if it's in fact correctly cycled? What kind of salt are you using? I have a feeling the folks at the store told you to use aquarium salt correct? If this is true you still have completely fresh water and it's not brackish one bit. You're going to need marine salt to keep this little fella happy and he's going to need a higher SG than brackish conditions. You NEED at least a hydrometer to measure the SG, measuring by tablespoons is 100% pointless. It's sad but you can't trust the majority of the "advice" that stores give you. Especially about Puffers since there's so much misinformation around about them. If you're going to want this little Puff to live a long healthy life (which you should since you've taken on the responsibility of purchasing him) then you're going to need to take the advice of some of the experts on here in a very quick fashion. If you did not cycle the tank then you're going to need to do DAILY 50% water changes for a few weeks so the little fella is not swimming around in his own poison. Grab a test kit for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate if you don't have one already and grab it fast!

I also would recommend a different species of puffer for a first, you will have to transition this guy from brakish to full marine....not a terribly easy thing to do.
