I'm looking for a couple colorful rays for my 180 gallon tank which will also house an armatus and possibly a tigrinus catfish.

I have never owned a ray before But I'm committed to researching them a ton before I get one.

I keep my tank bare and its currently filtered with a Fx5 and an emperor 400. (Might be getting additional Fx5 in near future

U will need at least a 350G to house it with ur tigirinus..
As the cats will be much faster to getting the food..
Unless u target feed.. Marbles would be a good choice..
Tough and nice looking rays.. Or u can go for pearls..
Other good colourful rays would be tiger or flower Rays..
But eventually they will all be going to a 350G..

If u r talking about housing them in the 180G for life..
Den u would wanna go for hystrix scobina or reticula..

If its for life, your options are very limited..

I don't see a ray going hungry, all my other fish are target fed and my ray eats everything. You are going to want a small ray like rectic or hysterix. Motoro will get big. Most any ray will eventually outgrow at setup, but if they ever get too big you can always bring them to my house :)

I would absolutely be open to negotiating some sort of ray trade w/ you when it gets too big man!

how long would it take a 6-8 inch motor to outgrow the 180?

I would go with the Motoro Stingray- they are very hardy and easy to care for. Here is a website i recommend purchasing your first ray.

I always target feed and the ray i pick will be in the 180 for life most likely.

Jus so u know.. A 180g is not enough to house a armatus of a Tigirinus for life too..
U definately need a better option for ur tanks.. Or its gonna be jam packed with ur big guys..
Cheers on ur first ray!!
