Which sand is the better sand??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lapis lustre Monterey beach blasting media, 100# for $12. Heavier than pfs and looks like a mix of play and pfs.

Okay, so here is whag is up. I ended up getting Quikrete playsand because it seems no store sells pfs. After about 45 minutes, i put it into the tank with cycled water from my 75 and i really like the way it looks. We will see how it hold out. But for 3.75 50lbs is pretty nice. I also just purchased some really nice looking peacock eels to get in there once it is ready.

Hope it turns out the way you want it. Sands an amazing substrate but sometimes hard to find the color/grain you want.

The thing about play sand is depending on your area it will look different. The first bag I ever bought was amazing but every bag after that had glitter type stuff in it and was so thin I couldn't use it. Filter sand imo is the way to go and I found some really nice pfs at a local pool store 10$ for 50 lbs. I believe it's silica but don't remember the particular brand.

there's no such thing as cycled water. the surfaces are where the denitrifying bacteria reside. if you're looking to cycle a tank with used water, it won't work.

OP: I did a lot of reading on sand before I used any. Some ppl like the playground sand because of looks and texture. But if your fish do a lot of digging. I'd recomend pool filter sand. As it is 100% silica sand. It dont have a lot of sharp edges that has been known to cut and infect the inside of a fishes mouth. And being 100% silica. It dont clowd the water like other sand does. And ive never had to deal wuth sand being siphoned like lighter sand.

But I gathered all that info from from websites and otger reviews. I have a friend that uses normal playground sand and never had a issue. But id rather be safe then sorry. So ill sacrifice my looks opinion for the better of the fish.

Just my opinion. Hope it helps.

Sorry I think i maybe typed that wrong...I had to do a water change on my 75 anyway, so I took that water that I removed and added it to the water that had already been in the tank for a while. I don't know if it is necessary or not, it to me seems to help keep things in balance. I have done it multiple times for my smaller tanks, so I figure it couldn't hurt to do it in larger tanks.
