Which should I do next? Managuense or Haitiensis?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Good quality jags are much more attractive fish than Haits are and are much more impressive as well. Haits are really bland and are just considered rare because they are hard to raise as juvis due to their frailty.

Your really good with haits and know them well! As Fish man said waaay bigger reward with a monster Hait. Try to get a dark Hait as most seem to be very white. Jags all look the same good or bad quality.

Love my Haits and in all honesty I have you and Duanes to thank that I still have.them.

Thanks guys for all the input. ATM I'm trying to see if I can have both:) I will have room in the long run but only after I thin out the magnumx umbees and my festae growouts. So maybe jag now and haits this summer after I get back from my vacation:) hmm...

Completely disagree. You should have just stated IMO, they are not Bland in any way.

Jason, I would definitely go with Haits.
They look so pre-historic IMO and that video you posted with the pair, that male was just stunning with the pure jet black look and same with the female.
Knowing you can take care of them properly and raise the fry, I would suggest a pair of Haits, and maybe a solo jag for your own enjoyment?
Also, I remember reading that you never owned a beani before....how about that? I just did ;)

I have owned beani before and wasn't successful. This was all before my success with haits. I'm sure now I won't have much of a problem but the thing is, I would have to set up a species tank and dedicate x amount of time and energy to grow them out like I do with haits. Only difference IMO is haits have a stage where they usually are safe from bloat at around 5"+ and beani can bloat at any size:( hmm maybe some time down the road. But I told Umbeeking that the only way I'd do beani was if I collected my own;) lol

I had bloat issues with haitiensus until I figured out that they require very specific conditions.
Very warm water (high 80s), no physical contact with tanks mates they can't kill, daily water changes, and high algae content foods.

Never had bloat problems with beani, but they seem to require all the same condition with the "exception", that cool water for them (high 60s/low 70s) has worked for me.

Managuense are much more forgiving, requiring basic aquarium practices, so your time limits and dedication and attention to detail should be your deciding factor.

I will definitely consider the advice if I decide to try beani, thank you Duane's.

Well I've decided that I'm definitely gonna get haits, but won't be until end of may before I'm ready for them. As for jags, I can get them anywhere, any time so I'm gonna hold off for now. This way I will have enough room to finish growing out my magnumx umbees untill may. That should be plenty of time to grow them all out and have a few pairs to sell. With that project finished, ill have extra tanks to dedicate to a large group of haitiensis to do the same thing:)

I dunno, I'm thinking after I do the group of haits I'm gonna take time away from all these "projects" and kick back, grow out my personal wet pets and enjoy it:)

"IMO" I don't see either fish being a bad choice if you have the experience to raise both types. A lot of the choice comes down to personal preference. Then there are less tangible elements involved. Obviously the jag is fairly common in some areas whereas the Haits are comparatively rare. As with any hobby something less common gets prestige points and drives up desirability. However, on their own merits, both a Jag and a Haitiensis are beautiful fish and are impressive at full maturity. Some are lumpy and washed out while some are striking and impressive. If the roles were reversed, you might see the Jag getting all the votes.
