Which species of Dats do best in soft(ish) water?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Bigdat, thanks for sharing the info. U do realise you now have many members salivating at the info u posted. I can't remember another thread on the datnoides forum where a member shared their experience of tigers spawning an laying eggs. With such a rare occurrence to happen in a home aquarium, I'm surprised u didn't steal a camera to capture evidence.
It's a shame u lost fish during the hurricane.

If this forum is so amateur, can u recommend another which is more suitable?

I totally agree :grinno:

Me, last year I sold my 9" widebar to chilired (a forum member here) for $320 ( I know I am stupid, but $$$ was needed > fish )

;)

Old pic, but don't tell me this widebar is over 10" long :naughty:

I kinda believe his words and I am using citrus acid to drop my ph down to 6.0 from 7.0 as I post now. The fish seems doing ok... for now...

;)

Ade,
I had no intention of making anyone salivate.
I noticed there was an ID chart on the Dat section which I wanted to see, and then noticed lujor's request for information. As I knew the answer and he needed help, I thought I'd help someone who was a beginner with a fish I've kept on and off for forty years, been to their habitat, and researched the fish while I worked in SE Asia in aquaculture.
I mentioned the spawning events as they occurred in soft water as this addressed lujor's question. I posted to help a beginner, not to get into arguments or give a course on aquaculture (which I get paid for).
I' m not about to explain for half an hour why some guy can't find them under four inches. Like I said, he knows nothing about the fish business.
And I'm not about to respond to clowns who have an extraordinary number of posts where I couldn't find in any of them something that advances the knowledge of those viewing the threads that he make his three and four word posts in.
Why do I need evidence of something I did nothing intentionally to do and has been done before?
Anyone who thinks that you can make a fortune breeding them knows nothing about the economics of the aquarium fish business and besides, others are breeding them and were breeding them when I had the spawnings.
Quite frankly I can make more money breeding/doing other things and have and do.
I really don't care who believes me. If lujor is helped that's fine with me. That was my intention.
Whoever is using citric acid, probably shouldn't. It's subject to bacterial degradation until unless you hit about 3.0 pH with it.
I'd use phosphoric. The pH doesn't need to be six. Just below neutral should be fine.
Unless you're familiar with handling low pH water you may be inviting a crash going that low. However I don't know your circumstances so you may be fine with what you're doing. Too many variables not defined by poster, Fishes33.
Ade, to pursue such things you might start with joining international aquaculture organizations and researching their database what's been done with the species you're interested in... or related species which can put you on the right track.

Thank you for your knowledge Bigdat please stay on the forum and share your experiences. A lot of people on here would love to hear more.

Bro you need to chill. I some what believe you but all im saying is i hope its legit. It's possible, but highly doubtful. Am i hurting your feelings?

Holy smokes bigdat. I think i touched a nerve there.... Wasn't intentional, but u should realise, when you post on the mfk datnoides forum about STs spawning, then you should know, there will be lots of questions and requests for pics..... That's all i and others have asked. Ok, some insults or rude comments, not from me though.
The ST is the holy-grail for many that keep and care
For tigers. For that reason, as soon as breeding STs is
mentioned, we all want to see pics.... That's all.

I will look into the international
Aquaculture organisations.... When ever I need professional advice.... Instead of amateur advice.

i have no reason to not beleive what bigdat is saying i just took a look at how long he has been a member and the amount of posts and what that tells me is he doesnt post until he has something good to say

thanks for the info

i do think that many people have had eggs in Thialand its just getting them to hatch thats the problem
