Which species of goonch Catfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo

both are similar with round eyes and both grow huge but for me the color and fins say bagarius
In the old labelling.
The bottom two pictures need to grow more to tell but may be yarrelli. Hard to tell with the colour from them in that tank.
can’t see the shape of the eyes for the top picture but would say between Yarerelli and bagarius again
That bottom photo does have me wondering! Very skinny though.

You are correct with the “new” identification although I do not still use it as I believe it still to be somewhat misleading. I now know of another potential varieties that grows large and are similar location based. B.lica has oval eyes which yours does not whilst being relatively similar patterned

More photos of the fish... evaluate better

This video illustrates what I think... b.bagarius is the one with large filaments in both the caudal and pectoral fins, while the one without filaments would be Lica. I believe this is only valid when they are small since as Lica grows the filaments grow too. And when my fish was small, it didn't have big filaments on its fins...

Disagree with the poster of the video. B.bagarius does not always have those fin extensions.
One trait you do often see with b. Bagarius (imo) is a bend in the dorsal fin which yours also has similar to my old one.
