Brook Trout because they are a true native to my area. I don't want to get into this what is and isn't a trout debate at all but rainbow trout and steelhead are two different species.

Michigan rivers/streams are way different then the Rio grande and other Rivers/streams.

Browns, brook trout also have Seafloren forms and travel to larger bodys of water.

Seafloren/ large lake run brookies are known as coasters....for some reason i am blanking on browns name, but it'll come to me...rainbows Seafloren/ large lake run name is steelhead...splake is the cross between a lake trout and brookie...the tiger is i beleve a rainbow crossed with a cutthroat or brookie and is starile....there is a few more but i am blanking on them...as for the "stream trout" most states classify "stream trout" to be brookies, rainbows and browns (with most forms/hybrids included)...lake trout and splakes tend to have their own seasons...

"Stream trout" and or "river trout" are the same things right? I mean the Rio grande is a river not a stream. In michigan Lakers (lake trout) live in deep cold pools in the river sometimes year round. The two browns are known as German Brown trout and Seafloren Brown trout. Although Streams can get to hot in summer for Lakers, they can be found near and in streams during winter.

yes they are the same...i beleve it is there name cause 90% of the origal home range is/was in a stream...ex they are still named stream trout even when they are in a lake...same all over with the lakers they can't tolorate to warm of water the shallowest lake i have seen them in was 30ft but that was stocked...also i see many lakers on the north shore of mn year round with fall and spring peaks...due to the spawning run/runs...as for the browns they are the same sp. of fish just diff. names like rainbow/steelhead, but they is a name like coasters for them and stocked steelheads are known as "loopers" or "cam loops"....they don't fight as hard as a natual steelhead.... trout and salmon are my all time favorite fish they are my specialty if you will...

just a tid bit of a sad thing i saw...watching a fishing show and they were fly fishing for rainbows...caught a few, then grabbed the extra heavy rods...slit the bellys of the bows and put them on the hook...rod goes off and a 10ft white sturgeon jumps...it was cool and said all at the same time...as sturgeon are high on my list aswell...their the BEST fighting fish i have ever caught and i have caught just about every fish sp. in mn...

Actually they're both the same species which would be Oncorhynchus mykiss.

You caught me.
but, Stock a steelhead smolt in a mountain stream and see if it lives though. Stock a rainbow in the ocean and see if it lives. Why do we have a world record rainbow and a world record steelhead? If they are the same species I see they share the same name. Just wondering, because a steelhead dies in a mountain stream and a rainbow trout lives. If they are the exact same thing why is that? They must be quite different at least phenotypically.

Steelhead acts more like a salmon than a trout, caught in the middle. A trout that thinks it is a salmon. lol
