Setting up my 240 tank for my cichla. Was thinking of doing pool filter sand since that is what i have in my 75 growout. But i was wondering if their was another substrate that helps give them better color. Maybe black sand? What do ya think

But if you want to go with sand, pool filter is definitely the best. I had it in my 90 back in NY. Still gets sucked up through a gravel vac.

I had bare bottom in my other tank for 2 years. But I just like the look better. Was looking to see if the light color of PFS washes out the cichla color. But you are right barebottom is SO easy

It's a pretty common coarse black sand in the aquaria trade and it's cheep. Just google it. I'll see if I can find a pic of my tank with it.

Barebottom is definitly easier, but I found I started to lose interest in my tanks because they were so boring looking. I suggest pool filter sand.

Go bare bottom with bright lights and the color will be fine. But ya cichla eat a lot and poop a lot so having a bare bottom will help with cleanimg amd overall your water quality
