Which Texas cichlid?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Agree with Tlindsey, and it looks to be a female, there is a dark section of the dorsal, and the slope of the forehead looks female to me (less steep than a male).
Below is a male carpintus to compare.

and now a female

I was going to to comment on the two toned yellow orange look on the back half of the body. That is looking like the offspring in an attempt at a Red Texas. I don't believe I have ever seen a Texas Cichlid have colors like that.

It does look almost exactly like my Red Texas did as a little tyke. Mine had a slightly darker background color but the markings were identical. Yours looks like it could be female.

If you paid for a Jack Dempsey you got a real bargain. Red Texas cichlids go for about $30 at PetSmart. :D

FWIW I have since learned that Red Texas cichlids often do not turn out to be red, and those at PetSmart are reputed to be pretty low quality... but you never know. Caligula is a big brute now and gorgeous. He's peeling a second time though and I am not sure what his final coloration will be. It looks like he may turn out predominantly white. He's wicked smart, highly aggressive and full of personality. Definitely a solo fish. When it comes to tank mates RTs are wood chippers with fins.

Post progression pics, if you would please!

Please gi1379024ve me your thought as well!

That is cyano IMO. The dark spot on the side, spots and yellowish coloration. There is some variation in color w/ them. Some are more purple and some more yellow.
