i just got money from christmas that im going to go get a canister filter for my tank to replace my two marineland biowheel filters (although they work well, id rather spend $0 on cartridges...). suggestions on a brand and model for a canister filter for my 56 gallon tank, but i need one that i can use later on a 90 gallon saltwater tank that will either be FOWLR or FO (probably fish only, but im going to need rocks in the tank so maybe FOWLR)?

thanks

and merry christmas

I'd recommend a Rena XP3 or XP4 for that size tank. I am using an XP4 on my 80g with two oscars and it is working well. The XP3 is extra filtration on my 320g.

I don't think you would want to use a canister filter on a saltwater tank, they usually get dirty too fast and add nitrates to the water. You would instead need a protein skimmer and live rock for any saltwater setup.

I had bought a Rena and I had seriously issues with it the main one being leakage....If your looking for a great canister filter thats easy to maintain and fairly cheap look at the EHEIM CLASIC, EHEIM ECCO, EHEIM PRO i personally use the Eheim Ecco and the maintenance on it is a 2 second job...Try any of those...And as to carcrazy comment on not getting a filter for a saltwater i would definatly oppose. Get a filter get a protein skimmer and get live rock live sand the works... The more filtration the better just stay on top of cleaning...They wont get to dirty to fast as long as you have the correct amount of fish in your tank.

the sw tank will only have 2 maybe 3 fish in it, but they do produce alot of waste. was going to do a lionfish and a snowflake eel. and i have heard great things about the eheim filters

go fluval you can get 404s brand new in the box of ebay for 80 bucks free shipping got two of um on my 75 gallon there awsome

eheim on salt tanks are good... add a hang on skimmer and decent amount of live rock and your set... easier way would be a hang on fuge they make for a nice self contained system ;)

well ill prolly do live rock and sand then. so i should go eheim and then for the saltwater tank get a skimmer? is there a model accompanied with this eheim filter? and will it be enough for the saltwater tank with its bioload etc.?

like a certain series that was stated above? (classic, ecco, pro, etc..)

just do a hang on fuge and forget about everything else
