I agree with the person who suggested 404s. I have 2, they seem very nice. Plus they are cheaper than xp3s or eheims.
 
XP3 from rena. I've got 2 that work great. I've thrown away ehiem canister pro 2 and all the cascades. The push to prime ends up failing after a while. Grrrr. It can be used in a salt but not worth while for a reef.

overall ive heard good reviews of the fluval 405, and it is a good price, but is it quiet? also long lasting?
 
I personally wouldn't worry about the cannister filter on a marine tank.
In my experience just heaps of live rock, plenty of powerheads, and a good quality skimmer will do the job nicely.

It's very quiet. As to its longevity, I've only had mine a month. But it works great so far.

biggest one you can afford.... all are quiet

never ran a skimmer with a fuge... good live rock some sand and let the fuge work its magic
