Which up to 16" ish cichlids?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Personally if I had to pick one fish that grew that large it would be a male jaguar cichlid hands down. Grows quick, has attitude, personality, looks cool, & still stays at a somewhat manageable size. Aside from that I really like Trimacs. Check out the pics don’t get much better IMO

Well, he did ask for up to 16 inch long fish so I would assume hes got at least a 125 or 150.

I've seen this question asked in one form or another 100 times. The answers have ranged from a gold fish bowl up to a lake. I also, depending on the size of the tank, say 125 on the small side to 300 gallons on the high end would consider the habits of the fish. A Jag as posted above (beautiful fish BTW) is an ambush preditor so it can be kept in a smaller tank than more of an open water preditor like a Peacock bass as an example and still be happy. So there is a reason I ask and would base my answer on the tank it's going to be kept in.

If the tank is big enough a male chancho would fit the bill perfectly. If you want lone fish that is, once mature most tank mates would get destroyed unless it's a really large tank.

Thanks for the replies
My tank.

A little surprised that it's suggested I'd need a 6x2 for a 16" fish, but that's why I'm asking, better to seek advice rather than f it up.

When my 3 pearsei hit 16 inches they were quite cramped in a 150 gal (6' X 2' X2') tank, and I finally moved them to a 300 gal rubbermaid. They seemed much more comfortable there, because beside simple total length, they have a quite massive body (as do bocourti).
I believe a 12" fish is more apropos for a tank in the 120 gal range, there is more to it as far as quality of life, than simply the ability to turn around without brushing fins on the tank walls.
