"SeaChem Prime™ is the complete and concentrated conditioner for both fresh and salt water. Prime™ removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. Prime™ converts ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that is readily removed by the tank’s biofilter. Prime™ may be used during tank cycling to alleviate ammonia/nitrite toxicity. Prime™ detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, allowing the biofilter to more efficiently remove them. Prime™ also promotes the production and regeneration of the natural slime coat. Prime™ is non-acidic and will not impact pH. Prime™ will not overactivate skimmers. Use at start-up and whenever adding or replacing water. A 2 L bottle treats over 20,000 gallons, much more than competing products.Marine and freshwater."

+1 for Pacu Mom

You will never be able to beat the Value of buying sodium thiosulfate. And mixing your own.

You can buy 2lbs for about 15 bucks shipped on ebay. 1 cup ST to 1 gallon water for solution. 5ml of solution will treat 20g.

you can search thru my old post about ST. I beleive the math worked out to 15bucks treating 60,000 gallons.

I buy 2lbs in january of every year. And i use it at 2x strength just in case.

Sodium thiosulfate is the main ingredient in EVERY water conditioner on the market.

When you buy that bottle of prime you are buying 98% ST. And then a couple of chemicals to convert the released ammonia from the chloramine bond into ammonium for a short time.

The reason only a small amount of people buy and mix there own is because people beleive the marketing gimmicks that companies such as prime use. They feel better using a product in a pretty bottle.

I think it`s two reasons..
1. Lack of knowledge..you can`t use what you do not know about.
2. Hassle Factor..I would rather spend the xtra $ for a bottle of Prime a couple times a year over ordering through ebay, storage, mixing..
But that is just my prefrence.

What do you do about chloramines, since Louisville water contains levels up to 2.6ppm? I use Prime, just because its easy and readily available, although its a little more expensive than I would like.

Chlor guard for the cheapness win. :) Almost...

ChlorGuard™ is the most concentrated dechlorinator on the market. A 250 mL bottle of Chlorguard™ will treat up to 10,000 US gallons of tap water. Our closest competitor’s 8 oz. (250 mL) bottle treats less than 6,000 US gallons.
Directions
BEGINNER: Use 2 drops for every 1–4 L (1 qt - 1 gallon*). ADVANCED: 1 drop added to 2 L (2 qt*) will remove 4 mg/L chlorine. Alternatively you may employ the following formula for a variety of chlorine and water levels: (CV)/8=d (for volume in liters) or (CV)/2=d (for volume in gallons*). C=chlorine concentration in mg/L, V=the volume of water being treated and d=the number of drops of ChlorGuard™ to use. For example, to remove 4 mg/L of chlorine in 2 L you would use (4*2)/8=1 drop.

Chlor guard is quite a bit cheaper than prime WILL NOT! work for chloramines though.

We use Pond Prime from Drs. Foster and Smith. $41.99 for 2 liters, which treats 40,000 gallons.

thks for this info. being on a limited income/high home care expense base, saving where I can to support my hobby is most appreciated (mind you my wife is not to thrilled I spend so much time or $ on this vs. helping out with taking care of family expenses)

so with water conditioners, poly fill/filter floss, meds, food, etc. I can well use all the tips I can to save.

thks all again.
