thks, based on prior recommendations on an older post, I did buy Prime via www.kensfish.com

just looking to see if I could save even more in the future when it comes time that I will need it again.

fyi - NYC/NYS does not use chloramines & my local water dept. stated they don't see using in the foreseable future.

What do you do about chloramines, since Louisville water contains levels up to 2.6ppm? I use Prime, just because its easy and readily available, although its a little more expensive than I would like.

Sodium thiosulfate is the same stuff thats in all water conditioners and it breaks the chloramine bond no problem at all. But prime and a few others (supposedly:screwy:) have additives that convert the ammonia from the chloramine over to ammonium. Ammonium is virtually harmless. And regular ST mix does nothing for the residual ammonia left over from the chloramine.
Like you mentioned we have 2.6ppm chloramine in louisville. When i do my weekly 60-75% water changes and test 15minutes afterwards I will find between a trace to .25ppm ammonia reading. And then 45-60mins later it will be gone with a 15x turnover rate. Its not a big deal to me but it may be for some.
PS-- when using prime I also can test the same amount of ammonia right after a water change. Now our API test can not tell the difference between ammonia(NH3) and ammonium (NH4). So I can not say for sure whether prime actually converts the residual ammonia or not.

I got that price beat. This site has 10% off all additives till Nov 20 so the final price would be $51.70 plus shipping for a 4 Liter prime. I think I am going to go for it this time rather than buy at the LFS. The website is at:

You will never be able to beat the Value of buying sodium thiosulfate. And mixing your own.

You can buy 2lbs for about 15 bucks shipped on ebay. 1 cup ST to 1 gallon water for solution. 5ml of solution will treat 20g.

you can search thru my old post about ST. I beleive the math worked out to 15bucks treating 60,000 gallons.

I buy 2lbs in january of every year. And i use it at 2x strength just in case.

Sodium thiosulfate is the main ingredient in EVERY water conditioner on the market.

When you buy that bottle of prime you are buying 98% ST. And then a couple of chemicals to convert the released ammonia from the chloramine bond into ammonium for a short time.

The reason only a small amount of people buy and mix there own is because people beleive the marketing gimmicks that companies such as prime use. They feel better using a product in a pretty bottle.

Thanks for the info.... extra $$$ for other aquarium stuff.

holy crap.... My water is only chlorinated and has no ammonia from the tap. Im gonna make me some dechlorinator I could save an ass load.... Thanks for the tip Hybrid
