Which would be better for a 125 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I already have the filters except for the AC 110 (some came with tanks), just need to decide which I wanna keep and which to sell (cant afford to keep them all)

The FX5 with the stock foam and 3 baskets full of ceramic rings sounds pretty good. I have experienced the air bubble issue with overstocking the FX5 with media in the past but it should be fine without the scrubbing pads etc.

Also the AC 110 comes with some bio media as well.

Please keep the suggestions rolling but I am not too concerned with other filters because I already have these ones.

yet another specific question turned into general debate.

seems a commonality lately, must be something in the water.

as always would need to know what you're stocking to give an accurate recommendation on filtration for your 125g. while the previous posters have been giving their opinions on which is better in general, I like to specify my advice on what the exact setup is.

So stocking, substrate, hood/stand setup and dimensions or pictures, lighting, tank placement (to window or not to window), price range, and how you're planning the inlets/outlets would be needed for you to get the most accurate advice to your situation.

also seems to be a lot of brand loyalty going around lately, I hope there's a vaccine for that, would hate to catch it.:nilly:

I've only had my FX5 for about 6 months. I have not experienced any problems yet. I have heard a few others mention issues with bubbles and the FX5. Can you shed a little light on that? I'd appreciate your response. Thanks in advance.

Tank: Standard 6' 125 gallon with no canopy & a standard stand (kinda vague but can't get the specifics at the moment)

Substrate: 3M colorquartz (depth not determined yet but about 1" or so)

Lighting: Standard florescent Coralife 50/50 bulbs x2 (26" bulbs maybe?)

Fish: 7 Moba's (currently about 3" but will be in this tank for a while), 2 Neo brichardi, & possibly a couple calvus in the future (depends on water paramaters & aggression)

Location: Close to a window, but the window does not get much light & won't be open a whole lot (only choice)

Decor: TX Holey rock (maybe around 80 lbs or so)

Will also have a couple powerheads so it will not just be water flow from the filters

When I had too much media in the FX5 I think it restricted the water flow which resulted in microbubbles coming from the output of the pump. I have read about it being from cavitation within the pump or even from a small leak on the intake side of the pump because the pump creates stronger vacuum while working against the excess media in the filter.

I really appreciate your passion for this topic, but do you really need to go there? It's just a conversation about filters. We're not discussing religion, politics or even the meaning of life. We're talking FISH . . . Try to consider utilization of a little diplomacy and take your own advice and try thinking your responses out. :chillpill:

All I said was you posted without either thinking or reading... because despite the Original Poster giving us two distinct options to offer recommendations on... you made a comparison of some other filter...

So either you didn't read... or didn't think...

Just like the other poster here who started asking about 300 gallon tanks and other unrelated concernes...

Yogurt hit the nail on the head... In this thread a specific quation was asked and the Original Poster deserves to be offered direct responses without derailments... and unrelated comparisons...

So be it this approach breeches concepts of respect and ettiquette... it's not quite religion or politics... but your passion for creating unrelated comparisons has already been established :-P

My opinino on the OP's filtration hasn't changed since page one...

The "up to XX gal tank" rating on filters is useless... the AC 110 is rated for up to 110 gal tanks...

Either filtration option originally mentioned would be able to do a sufficient job if set up logically...

Decor has a big impact on filtration... If your decorations make dead spots, you have to overcome those dead spots with current...

The fish you stock in the tank will have a big impact on filtration needs. Tetras make little poop that slight currents can easily wisk away into a filter... but adult PBass make huge poop that weighs more and takes more to move into an intake...

The amount of maintenance you wish to do on the tank also has a big impact. If you would be happy to commit to frequent vacuumings, then strong currents aren't at all necessary. But if you want to make the system require little personal work to keep it looking fresh, stronger currents are necessary.

The flow rates of the AC + FX5 will be a lot stronger than the 2217's... so in most cases I think they will be a better choice...

No filter has a better reputation than Eheims, so if you are stockign small fish you may consider them though...

Either way you may want to add some powerheads... but you can set things up without them and see what you think. Then add them if and when you need them...
